This film about a Black railroad worker facing everyday racism in the southern states of 1960s America remains Michael Roemer's best known. Staged with a great deal of compassion and featuring outstanding actors, the portrayal of African American life was a pioneering achievement. NOTHING BUT A MAN focuses particularly on the complexities of daily life and Roemer shows how racism, gender equality, and workers' rights are irrevocably linked. (hb)
